A Big Girl Bedroom: The Design Plan

It is an exciting time (and a little emotional) when your child is ready to transition from their nursery into a big kid room.  When we found out that we were pregnant with our second child, our daughter was three.  Her nursery was in the smallest of the bedrooms and her crib had already been converted into a toddler bed.  After careful consideration, we decided to keep her room the nursery for the new baby and redesign our guest room into her big girl room.

The design plan

We wanted to get started early, so our daughter would make the transition long before the new baby arrived.  We wanted the room to be all about her, and not feel like she was getting moved just because there was a new kid on the block.  I made sure she was included in the design planning and process, and she was excited!

It's a good idea to choose furniture that can grow with your child.  In the long run this will save money.  By choosing neutral colors and transitional pieces, they will stand the test of time.  I decided to go with a full size fabric platform bed.  I like the idea of the low profile, meaning she can get in and out of bed with ease, and should she ever fall off, there would be a low likelihood of injury.  And the best part... the full size means plenty of room for family snuggling and reading books before bed.

Once the larger investment pieces have been selected, it's time to accessorize.  This is a great place to involve your child.  What is their favorite color, animal, hobby, character?  For my daughter this meant pink.  If she had her way, every single thing in the room would have been pink.  Her theme request was birds, which carried over from her nursery.  So now for the fun, curating a pink bird themed big girls room!

For a child's room I like to find less expensive accessories and ways to bring in color and themes.  It's likely they will go through phases with their likes and dislikes, and accessories and paint are low cost ways to have the flexibility to easily change things up in the future. For the best deals and selection, I often shop online, brick and mortar discount stores, and big box stores.

First up is the wall treatment.  I'm thinking a large pink and white horizontal stripe for one of the walls, while keeping everything else neutral.  This is the inspiration, and better yet, it's a full tutorial.  Wish me luck!

I can't wait to share the completed project.  Which bed would you choose?  What do you think of the overall design plan?  So far my 'client' is loving it!
